A Little Personal History:

I really got into grits while living in Texas.  For breakfast, they’re a real treat. Here’s how I make my grits.

Time: – Preparation:    5 minutes
– Cooking:         20 minutes
Equipment: 1 large saucepan, measuring cups and spoons
Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup hominy grits
  • 1 Tbs butter
  • 1 Tbs brown sugar

Procedure:

  1. Bring water to a rapid boil in a saucepan.
  2. Gradually pour in the hominy grits and stir with wooden spoon.
  3. Reduce heat to low.
  4. Add the butter and brown sugar and stir.
  5. Cook for 20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed, stir occasionally.
  6. Serve hot.

Advanced Preparation:

 

Tips, Notes, and Variations:

  • If you don’t like sweeter grits, leave out sugar. If you do like them sweeter, try different natural sweeteners (i.e. honey, maple syrup, fruit jelly, etc).
  • Grits can also be flavored with cheese, sunny side up egg, small bits of ham or sausage or just topped with a pat of butter and salt to taste.
